Day 106 - day 21 of 30daysofbiking
A long, hard singlespeed ride in Willowdale and Bradley Palmer State Forests.
Day 105 - in the Fells - first ride on the Ibis this year
I took the Ibis out in the Fells this morning and got some very different riding in than what I do with the singlespeed. The downhills are definitely a lot more fun!
Day 20 of #30daysofbiking
Unfortunately, it needed new brake pads. Fortunately, they took less than 5 minutes to install!

Day 104 - in the Fells
My legs felt really heavy after getting on the singlespeed this morning, but they felt better and better as the ride went on.

Day 100 - riding in the rain with the Rippahs
It was a fast, rainy morning today. But I got in day 100 of activity in a row, and I'm halfway through 30daysofbiking.
Day 99 - singlespeed gnashing (April 14)
The woods were really nice, and I took the singlespeed through the mountain bike loop in the Fells. I only dabbed in three spots - the left hand singletrack turn near long pond, the right hand turn on the rocky downhill (should be able to get that), and the uphill soon after the downhill.

Day 98 (April 13)
Sadly, it was raining at Sugarbush.
After a huge Palm Sunday dinner, I went for a short ride in the woods.
Day 13 of 30daysofbiking

Day 97- Vermont uphills in the mud and downhill slush
April 12 Day 12 of 30daysofbiking.
Day 35 of snowboarding!
I rode up 3 out of the 4 miles of Lincoln Gap and then the really hard part was West Hill road in the mud. 12 miles and 1500 feet of climbing.
Then I headed over to Sugarbush to ride all day from 9:45 to closing. Fun spring conditions - Paradise was amazing. Eden, Castlerock, Middle Earth and the toboggan run were a little bit thin.
Day 96 (April 11) - muffin ride
30daysofbiking day 11 - Ripper Muffin with Jeremy Baker, Austin Sweeney, and Fabio Acuri.

Day 94 - Rippah Openah - Day 9 of 30daysofbiking
We had 32 people on the Openah. It was a big crowd. Pace was pretty relaxed, although it got fast at times.
Day 93 - Afternoon ripper - April 8
Dave Sauer sent out a last minute call for a 4PM ride. I saw him and Jeremy Baker just as they were leaving from Starbucks in Winchester and we braved the traffic and escaped in one piece.

Day 92 - beautiful morning ride
Day 7 of 30 days of biking.
I missed the Ripper Muffin ride because of a garage flat. But...
I got to take some nice pictures of a glorious morning.
Day 91 (April 6) - really fun spring conditions.
Finally - nice spring skiing!
Day 34 of snowboarding!!
The snow was soft and the jumps were super easy to land. And there were launching pads everywhere.
I did my best run ever at the opening of Eden Woods - really had the board turning quickly.
Katie airing it out.

Day 90!! Winspring conditions and a 2.5 hour bike ride
Today was a full day. I started off with a wet 2.5 hour, 40 mile road ride. Then Katie and I drove to Vermont. Then we skied for 3 hours. The conditions were firm up top - there was even traditional New England boilerplate! The bottom half of the mountain was much better. We skied with Kevin and his posse - Katie definitely held her own.
Day 33 of snowboarding!

Day 87 - 30daysofbiking day 2
My first Ripper ride of the year - hills in Arlington and Winchester. Here's the top of the Arlington water tower.

Day 85 - a reflective walk to McCall Middle School and back
Today was my 85th consecutive day of activity since January 7. For some strange reason, it was also the hardest day, because getting some activity in just wasn't top of mind. Plus, 30 days of biking begins tomorrow, and although I enjoy doing it, I have really loved the variety afforded by consecutive activity as opposed to riding, riding, and more riding. But I'll be thankful to get a month of gentle riding in, although most it will be of the paved variety as opposed to general off road fun, silliness, and grinning.
Here's the view from the top of the hill near my house. The lights in the center of the picture in the distance are the Prudential Center in Boston.
Day 84 - day 32 of snowboarding!!
It was a wet a drizzly day at Sugarbush Sunday March 30. The lower mountain was skiing well, but the upper mountain was crusty and not that great as a result of the mixed precipitation. Katie and I managed to not ski Spring Fling the entire weekend! We did have two great runs down Deeper Sleeper and Katie really did a great job snowboarding on her second day.

Day 83 - 31st day of snowboarding.
Katie is doing well on her first day of snowboarding in 4 years.
Day 31 of snowboarding!
Friday, March 28, 2014
Day 82 - intense gym session
30 minutes of grinding away indoors. Ready for the Rippah Openah for certain!
Day 81 - March 27 - icy Mountain Bike Loop
I decided to head into the Winchester side of the Fells and do the Mountain Bike Loop for a change. Unlike the Medford side there was a lot of ice - I managed to get through relatively unscathed - my ice riding skills are definitely improving!!
Day 80 - March 26 - walking Horn Pond
Anita and I went for a really nice walk together around Horn Pond. It was very blustery and there was almost no one there. Towards the end we saw some ducks and geese. The geese were crossing the road, but I was slow on the draw with my phone and the battery died just as I was about to take a picture.

Day 79 - Singlespeeding
Not much ice in the Fells compared to Topsfield. Had a great time single speeding.
Day 78 - Strava shortchange!
March 24. Went for a 40 minute walk in the Fells behind my house and Strava said I walked for 7 minutes. Argh!
Day 77 - horror show
March 23 - headed into Willowdale State Forest without studded tires (took them off that morning) into trails sheeted with ice. It completely sucked. But at least Matt didn't have studs either!

Friday, March 21, 2014
Day 75 - nice short ride along part of the Rippah course
It was 45 degrees out and muddy on the trails. Went for a 11 mile road ride on part of the Rippah route.
Thursday, March 20, 2014
Day 74 - walking to the center of town
Anita and I had a really nice walk to the center of town to take her to work. Then I walked home, for a total of nearly 3 miles. A good break from cycling. We saw a couple of ducks crossing the road in the center of town.

Day 70 - first tracks!
Day 30 of snowboarding!
Katie and I were invited to first tracks. I promptly lost my snowboard getting on the lift but enjoyed the fresh powder for a couple of hours. We ended with a super run down Spillsville and then headed to the Hostel for a great brunch.
Day 69 - spring at the Bush
Day 29 of snowboarding!
Crowds and spring conditions were there in force at Sugarbush Saturday.
Katie and I enjoyed the natural features on Birch run a lot and took a couple of trips down Castlerock as well.
Friday, March 14, 2014
Day 67 - winter storm Vulcan surfing!
Day 28 of snowboarding!
19" of pow and third chair! We had great fun crusing around for good spots to ski and Katie and figured out Spring Fling was superb because the wind kept blowing over the tracks. Here she is tearing it up.
Thursday, March 13, 2014
Day 66 - start of the storm
Day 27 of snowboarding!
Katie and I did laps of Castlerock chair and skied Rumble for the first time. It was hard!
Tuesday, March 11, 2014
Day 65 - walking to the town library and back
With my lovely wife Anita. 3 miles. Happy conversation.
Monday, March 10, 2014
Day 64: a couple miles of walking with Emilia
Emilia and I had a good chat and walk around the neighborhood - we logged about two miles in all. A great Monday warm down.
Day 63 - fast and firm at the mountain.
Day 26 of snowboarding!
The groomers were ok, and the ungroomes runs were definitely challenging. My butt was sore from falling on hard moguls - although we started at opening, I had to call it a day by 3.
Saturday, March 8, 2014
Day 61 - road ride
Friday, March 7. Just 45 minutes around Mystic lake and then up by the golf course in Arlington.
Thursday, March 6, 2014
Day 60 - singletrack on the Winchester side.
I did part of my regular mountain bike loop on the Fells orange trail this afternoon. The conditions were good and it was definitely fun to make it through the frozen chop.

Day 59 - another fascinating day at the gym - NOT!
Gettting ready for the Ripper Openah a few weeks from now with some focused stationary bike time.
Tuesday, March 4, 2014
Monday, March 3, 2014
Day 57: Quick 1.5 mile walk with Anita
I snuck in a quick 1.5 mile walk with Anita tonight. It was very brisk, but it was good to walk around the neighborhood and talk and keep the streak going. Only 13 more days left!
Sunday, March 2, 2014
Day 56 - overnight snow at the Bush
Day 24 of snowboarding!
4-5 inches of new snow disappears fast at a Sugarbush. Katie and I got second chair today at Superbravo and were in the first 20 chairs on Castlerock. It was weird to see Castlerock and Middle Earth groomed. Katie and I did have a lot of fun today and we ended the day with some big airs (for us) on the Slowpoke terrain park.
Day 55 - fast and firm at the Bush
Day 23 of snowboarding!
Katie and I had fun riding Slidebrook back and forth between the two peaks at Sugarbush yesterday. Not icy, but off trail it was firm!
Friday, February 28, 2014
Day 54 - the gym - yuck!
I ended up going to Planet Fitness to ride the stationary bike for 35 minutes. It was lame, but at least I got a decent workout in early this morning.
Day 53 Walk at night with Katie
I'm trying to get some code development each day as well, and it has been tough trying to squeeze both in. I went for a walk around the neighborhood at night with Katie - and she worked on chicken names for the chicks we are going to host for Wright Locke farm starting next week.

Day 52 - running - meh.
I actually ran yesterday as well. Then again today. Emilia is starting track and the whole family is heading out together. It was cold and dark. Not my favorite!
Tuesday, February 25, 2014
Day 51 - tough ride in the woods
I received a couple of text messages yesterday inquiring about a ride in the woods. Oof that was hard. Matt and I really struggled to head out from my house to Long Pond to meet Tom Schneider. Then Tom and I had a decent ride around the reservoir. But it was all pretty challenging!
Day 50 - road ride!
I went for a short but tough road ride - a mini Ripper Hill ride. Considering how little riding I've been doing recently, a 3:54 time up Girard isn't bad.
The sunset was pretty awesome to boot!

Day 49 - winter walks in the slushy snow
This weekend I decided not to head to Sugarbush after spending the week in New Mexico. Good decision, as I would have had to battle both the weekend crowds as well as the firm conditions.
Yesterday was a day for shoveling and today was a day for waking. I walked a couple of miles with Anita and then a mile and a half with Katie. We went into the woods both times and enjoyed the quiet white slushy conditions. Tomorrow I might get on the road bike - we'll see.
Saturday, February 22, 2014
Day 48 - back home to heavy wet snow
I spent an hour today clearing the driveway and walkways from snow and ice. Success! The 50 degree weather helped!
Day 47 - half day in Albuquerque and transfer home
Emilia and I spent the morning exploring the Albuquerque biopark. It turned out to be a good two miles of walking before we even started walking through the Albuquerque and O'Hare airports, which probably added at least another mile of walking.
Scenes from the biopark:

Day 46 - hiking around the Rio Grande and Santa Fe museums
During the course of today, I walked nearly 3 miles exploring the Rio Grande Gorge bridge and museums in Santa Fe.
Here's the bridge (thanks Katie for the photo!)
Day 45 - Taos skiing!
Day 21 of snowboarding!
Although the conditions were not that great, Katie and I skied all the groomers at Taos and I hiked the ridge and rode down Corner Chute to check out some of the off piste action.
Day 44: Horseback riding!
Anita suggested that we go horseback riding today! We went to the Broken Saddle in Cerrillos outside of Santa Fe and had a great ride for an hour. It was the first time on a horse for me, ever, and a bit scary in the beginning. Once I relaxed it was fun and the views were amazing. Anita said my horse, Duke was passing gas a lot, but I did not smell that!

Day 43 - maybe the streak is ending?
Day 20 of snowboarding!
I went to Ski Santa Fe with Katie today and we were having a great time - until I crashed - twice. The first time was really hard when I hit a branch sticking out of the ground and ended up going head over heels and landing on my left knee.
I was able to finish up the morning, but after the drive back I was definitely sore and in pain and I didn't have a full range of motion without pain. We have a couple of days before heading to Taos so I'll give it some ice and see how it holds up.
Day 42 - on the slopes with the girls
Day 19 of snowboarding!
Our family headed up to Ski Santa Fe for a great sunny day of skiing and riding. Conditions were great considering mi recent snowfall. Whee!
We all had a great time. Katie found her Moey runs, Emilia was smiling all day and Anita had a great day with her lessons.
